
Officer Involved Shooting or Critical Incident Response
If involved in a shooting or other critical incident:
- Immediately contact an NPU Representative
- Do not waive your Miranda Rights
- You are compelled to answer questions for a Public Safety Statement (PSS) only
- Do not volunteer information or answer questions (outside of a PSS) until a representative arrives
- Do not participate in a walkthrough of the event until a representative arrives
- Do not talk with media or with other officers
Public Safety Statement (PSS)
A supervisor may administratively order any officer to immediately provide public safety information necessary to secure the scene, identify injured parties and pursue suspects. A supervisor should not attempt to order any officer involved to provide information other than the public safety information.
Public Safety information should be limited to information regarding:
- Identity/status and location of suspects(s)
- Identity/status and location of injured parties
- Any shots fired, by whom and which direction
- Perimeter of the incident scene
- Identify of known or potential witnesses
- Other pertinent information
Examples of Public Safety Statement questions that will be asked:
- Did you discharge your weapon
- If so, what direction?
- Approximately where were you located when you fired?
- How many shots do you think you fired?
- Is anyone injured? If so, where are they located?
- Are there any outstanding suspects?
- If so, what is their description?
- What direction and mode of travel?
- How long have they been gone?
- What crimes have they committed?
- What type of weapon do they have?
- Is it possible the suspect fired rounds at you?
- If so, what direction were the rounds fired from?
- How many shots do you think the suspect fired?
- Approximately where was the suspect located when they fired?
- Do you know if any other officer discharged their firearms?
- If so, who are they?
- Approximately where were the officers located when they fired?
- Are there any weapons or evidence that needs to be secured/protected? If so, where are they located?
