NPU Family,

Its that time again….Newsletter with updates. Lots of info to give and some important updates.

Let’s start with NPU is excited to be able to sponsor a foursome to play in the Swing for their Kids Golf Tournament being held December 6, 2025 at the Wild Horse Golf Club in Henderson!  To enter into the raffle send your name, team member names (if you have) and your contact info to RPowell@nvpolice.org by 11/17/2025 12pm.  The drawing will be held 11/17/2025 at 5pm.

For those of you who haven’t heard of the Swing for Their Kids Golf Tournament, proceeds from the tournament benefit the children of fallen officers in the State of Nevada by providing Christmas presents and “Santa checks”.

Now for our other updates…

We were hoping to start rolling out the new NPU phone app soon but have run into some unforeseen technical issues. The app will deliver all the info you’ll need. You will get updates, newsletters, access to all NPU Executive board member contact info, Union Reps/Stewards contact info, FAQ, Gear Shop, Critical Incident info (no cellular service needed), member account settings and Profile, member resources, and member benefits. Stay tuned for more details and updates about the app.

On October 3, VP James Mortimore and I attended a Worker’s Comp/Heart Lung training presented by GGRM Law Firm held at the Washoe County Sheriffs Deputies Association. WOW! There is so much to learn and know about these two extremely important issues. Requirements to establish a claim, benefits, selecting a doctor, independent medical exam, temporary total disability, heart and lung program claims, most common defenses (used by the state to deny), and benefits under the claims. Each of these is extremely complex. I’ll say this over and over….if you are hurt on the job, speak to one of your NPU reps as soon as you can. Certainly, within a day or two. There are timelines that are vital to a successful claim, and if those timelines are missed, it could jeopardize your ability for a claim. One of NPU’s most important partners is GGRM Law Firm. We have a great relationship with the firm, and we know that they will take GREAT care of our membership. If you know someone that was hurt or injured on duty, encourage them to seek guidance from NPU. That is what we are here for. Also, as some of our members near retirement, there is a process to go through (outside of PERS) that involves your ability for the Heart and Lung program. The ability to be able to get screened by an independent physician before retirement (not one of the states doctors) is so important.

October 15-16 NPU held our Fall Executive board meeting. It was an extremely busy two days, and the agenda was packed. Some of the topics and issues discussed were: NPU budget, website/phone app update, NPU policies/bylaws, upcoming NPU elections, NPU Board member assignments and responsibilities, membership benefits (more to come on this), NPU Steward/rep training, NPU Charities and charitable giving, review of NPU vendor contracts, and legal updates from our legal team (Reese, Ring & Velto).

During the last few weeks, one of our Vice-Chair’s from Unit L resigned his position and we had an open seat on the Unit L Committee. We are happy to announce that we were able to fill that open seat with Justin Branske. Justin is a Sgt with NHP in Pahrump. Please welcome Justin to our team. He will do great things. Along that same topic, lets also give a huge thank you to the exiting Unit L Vice Chair Ian Knight (formerly of Dept of Agriculture Police). But don’t worry, Ian didn’t leave us totally. Ian has lateraled over to UNR PD and has remained a part of your NPU Steward/Rep team. Finally, a HUUUUUGE THANK YOU to Andy Granata for his tireless efforts leading the Unit L team during negotiations. Andy has been promoted to the rank of Captain at NHP and we are confident he will continue to do great things.

We have some NPU Executive Board positions that the term expires December 31, 2025.

  • DPS North – currently vacant
  • State Parks – currently held by Kyle Groth
  • Supervisor-at-large – currently held by Mike Bradford

If interested in being a part of the Executive Board in one of these positions, please email rpowell@nvpolice.org to get more info.  We will be holding elections in just a few weeks so don’t wait if you are interested in serving on the Board.    The term will start January 1, 2026.

Your NPU Executive Board is excited to welcome Bob Haigney to the Board.  Bob served almost 20 years with the Nevada State Police and had the opportunity to work in various regions during his time.  Bob retired in October after serving as a Captain with NHP and this week he graciously accepted an appointment to fill the Retiree seat on the NPU Board.  I look forward to working with Bob and hope to increase our retiree membership.

By the sounds of it, Governor Lombardo will be holding a Special Legislative Session sometime in November. Dates TBD. From what I have heard, it will last less than 1 week. I have been reaching out and speaking with some legislators, lobbyists and other NV Law enforcement union heads to keep tabs on all of the “rumors” of what this “special session” will consist of. Unfortunately, money for State Law Enforcement will not be on the agenda. As of now, the major bills that will be heard are:  NV Crime bill, Federal subsidies, and the Film tax. Stay tuned for more info to come.

We will start reaching out to membership, an email and/or survey to see what members want to see in the next CBA negotiations for both Unit G and L (besides raises…hahahaha). We are already planning the compensation part.

As usual, feel free to reach out directly to me or any of your NPU Executive board members. We are here to help anyone that needs guidance.

Dan
