NPU Family,
I just wanted to give an update after the first month of the Nevada Legislative session. We completed our first round of negotiations for both Unit G and Unit L. Unfortunately, there is not much to report on, I can say that we are still optimistic that we will make some good progress when round 2 starts next week. Stay tuned for more info regarding negotiations in the following weeks. FINGERS CROSSED!
In the first month of the legislative session, I was very active at the legislative building, had several meetings with key political players and was extremely active in the media. What I think is a bit different this time (regarding the media) is that they are certainly more interested in our staffing issues. A few of you have reached out regarding the amount of press and focus that has been on NHP’s staffing issues. Again, I want to reiterate that the media has reached out to me regarding the high vacancy rates of the Highway Patrol. I do not seek the media out to report these issues. I have done my absolute best to make mention of the other departments and divisions and the staffing issues there. But again, the news outlets are doing stories specifically on the Highway Patrol staffing woes. Rest assured that when I am speaking with our Senators and Assembly members, I talk about ALL the Departments and Divisions. In case you missed the stories, here are the latest and greatest….
The media is giving us great exposure to the public and it is working. The contribution amounts we pay into PERS has really gotten traction in the Legislature. There is now a working group with some key legislators, Union leaders and PERS to discuss the issue and to come up with some viable solutions. This is not something that has ever happened in the past. So again, keep your fingers crossed for a positive outcome. If you aren’t already following NPU social media, please make sure to do so as we have been very active on what we are doing for our membership. In the next few weeks, as bills start to get closer to committee votes, we will send out email info for you to reach out to Senators and Assembly members, to include email, bill #s, and some info pertaining to what that bill is about. That will be a great way for NPU membership to let your elected politicians know what we support or don’t support. You can also check out our website in the member area for bills we are tracking.
We still have a few tickets available for sale for the Northern NV C.O.P.S Evening in Blue event on April 12th. Tickets are $100 each, if interested please email rpowell@nvpolice.org for arrangements.
Also, the Tahoe Knight Monsters are hosting a First Responders’ weekend Saturday, March 29th and Sunday, March 30th. For $40 you will have access to a First Responder’s game, a pre-game reception (one-hour pre-game of complimentary beer) and the Knight Monsters’ game. Here is the ticket link: First Responders Appreciation Weekend
Please feel free to call, text or email me directly with any concerns, comments or if you just want to talk….I’m in. Most of you already know that I like to have a conversation rather than text or email back and forth. Please also feel free to reach out to any of the Board of Directors, they also are happy to answer questions or listen to member’s comments. Thank you to everyone for your continued support during this Legislative session and throughout the year. Many of you have reached out to me with your support. I appreciate it more than you know.
